Good question! Here's our story
From a small market stall in Eumundi to
prime-time on Channel 10’s Shark Tank
Hey, I’m Tanya!
A self-taught cushion designer (and lover), mum of one, wife and owner of Sunburst Outdoor Living.
Okay, I’ll be honest – I never woke up one day and thought I’d start the biggest cushion cover company in Australia (and end up on national television!).
Actually, Sunburst Outdoor Living started out of frustration.
Here’s a little background: My husband and I are self-confessed renovation addicts (14 homes and counting).
We renovate properties then sell them – so, naturally, staging each new home for sale is part of the process.
Billowing blinds, glorious fruit bowls, plush throws for the bed... It was S0 easy to find nice ones at a reasonable price!
But cushion covers? Not a chance.
No matter how much searching, sourcing and sales warehouse visiting we did… We could never find premium quality cushion covers to suit our original spaces. It drove us crazy!
We tried adding splashes of colour here, pops of personality there. But nothing was ever quite as versatile, convenient or impressive as vibrant cushion covers.
I searched Australia-wide and – nada.
It seemed that asking for high-quality, durable, water-resistant cushion covers that held colour in the Australian sun (and actually looked amazing) was asking too much.
So I took matters into my own hands.
At the time I had a little stall at Eumundi markets in Queensland (near Noosa). I sold dog collars and little bits and pieces.
One day I put out one of the cushion covers I’d been designing for our renovations.
It sold.
I was shocked – thinking ‘it must’ve been a fluke.’ So I designed some more. And before I knew it, they all sold too. So I kept creating, and before I knew it, my designs were making their way into homes, hotels and happy places right across Australia!
Fast-forward to 2021 and Sunburst Outdoor Living has sold over 250,000 cushion covers.
So, how did this happy accident turn into a thriving business?
Well, turns out I have great taste haha! I don’t follow the trends… I create designs that inspire me. That can be mixed and matched to suit all types of tastes and spaces. Designs that are ultimately here to make you feel happy. You might’ve seen me on Shark Tank, too.

OUR PROCESS
Design
Most of the designs at Sunburst Outdoor Living are created by me. I’m particularly inspired by rooms ready for a makeover and artworks that spark new ideas. 99% of my designs are never printed! That’s because on screen and on print can look very different. Same goes for designs sourced from artists. I always make sure all are of the best aesthetic. If it’s not? We start again!
Test
Only the very best materials and quality standards will do. So we run a test design to review, refine and perfect your cushion covers before they hit the store. This testing can go back and forth for up to ten rounds before we feel the quality’s up to scratch! We never press ‘go’ just because it’s easier. We pride ourselves on offering premium quality and quadruple-check it remains consistent, no matter how long it takes.
Manufacture
I work directly with a small family business in China. Run by single mum, Ruby, we speak daily to source the very best fabrics and brainstorm new design ideas. Ruby oversees all the manifacturing side. First we source raw materials, send off fabrics for UV treatment and water resistance to another small, family run business. We pay the best price for the best quality while keeping your price low.
Release
We release all new designs to our VIP list first! Since we run small batches (not mass-produced), sometimes they don’t make it to the shop! Make sure you’re a VIP to never miss the latest designs.
